Cities Alliance at Africities 2015

Cities Alliance will host a large booth at the Africities exhibition, which will take place 29 November through 2 December in Johannesburg. We will also co-host two Open Sessions, two Thematic Sessions, a Political Debate and a learning workshop for our 2012 Catalytic Fund grantees.

[20 November  2015] –  As the world’s premier gathering of local governments in Africa held every three years, the Africities Summit is an important event for the Cities Alliance partnership.

Organised by United Cities and Local Governments Africa (UCLGA), it is a valuable opportunity for knowledge sharing, networking, and evaluating the decentralisation process in Africa.

This year, Africities will take place from 29 November to 3 December 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa with the theme “Shaping the Future of Africa with the People: The Contribution of African Local Authorities to Agenda 2063 of the African Union.”

Cities Alliance will host a large booth at the Africities exhibition, which will take place 29 November through 2 December at the Sandton Convention Centre. Visitors are welcome to come by the booth between 10:00 and 19:00, learn more about the Cities Alliance and our programmes, and meet our delegation.

As at previous Africities forums, we will host a series of open sessions, learning events and policy discussions. They include:

Thematic Sessions:

  • Strategy Formulation – Planning and Programming, 29 November 15:00 to 18:00

  • Strategies for strengthening the institutional environment of local governments (City Enabling Environments rating system), 29 November 15:00 to 18:00

Open Sessions:

  • Youth and the City: Youth Participation towards Inclusive Cities in Africa (with UN-Habitat), 1 December, 9:30 to 12:30

  • Local Governance and the Role of Inclusive partnerships for the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda (Habitat III), with DELOG, 1 December, 15:00 to 18:00

Political Debate:
  • Donors and Development Partners, with DELOG, 2 December 15:00 to 18:00

Catalytic Fund Learning Workshop

In addition to these Africities events, Cities Alliance will also host a learning event in Johannesburg for grantees who received funding through our 2012 Catalytic Fund Call for Proposals with the theme “Youth and the City.”  The workshop aims to capture the experience and knowledge generated through the 2012 Call. It also takes advantage of the presence of grantees from UN-Habitat’s Youth Fund at Africities to stimulate exchange among both sets of grantees.

The results of the workshop will be transformed into policy recommendations, which in turn will be presented and discussed with mayors and other participants at the Africities Open Session on “Youth and the City” on 1 December.
