This section provides highlights of Cities Alliance's global programme portfolio.
In an increasingly urban world, the major resilience challenges of this century – job creation, poverty reduction, climate change, environmental sustainability, community development and social inclusion – will be won or lost in cities.
Between 2014 - 2018 Cities Alliance established its first-ever Joint Work Programme focused on advocacy to create and deliver a common set of priority messages to inform and influence the Post 2015 Agenda.
The JWP participated in global negotiations as a coherent, dedicated group with a strong voice in support of the important role cities play in sustainable development. It supported the successful global advocacy movement to include SDG11 in the 2030 Agenda and to recognise the importance of the local level in Agenda.
Members agreed to build on the unique platform the JWP had created and undertake a second phase as cities, regions and countries turn to the implementation of the global agendas. From 2017-18, Phase II of the JWP explored the urban dimension of the different global agreements, especially the 2030 Agenda and New Urban Agenda. It focused on an integrated implementation and follow-up and review for these agendas, both in and with cities and through multi-stakeholder partnerships.
Future Cities Africa (FCA) is a partnership initiative launched by Cities Alliance and the UK Department of International Development (DFID) that ran from 2014-16. The programme worked with participating cities to develop tools for ‘future proofing’ themselves and assuring their resilience. It supported the cities to assess, anticipate and minimise future challenges across five dimensions: governance, economy, service, citizenship and environment. FCA comprised a set of six coherent, interconnected activities that were all implemented through a participatory approach to enhance local ownership, engagement and capacity development.
The FCA programme produced a number of outputs, including a feasibility study, research reports, and innovative studies and toolkits.
