Japan joined the Cities Alliance in 2000. The Japanese government is represented at the Alliance by the following organisations:

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is an independent governmental agency that coordinates development aid for Japan. It provides technical cooperation and other forms of aid promoting economic and social development in developing countries.
