Twize, 10 years of Urban Social Development in Mauritania

This brief published by GRET in May 2012 looks at the spectacular urban growth in Mauritania since independence. In 60 years, the population of the capital, Nouakchott, has gone from 500 to nearly one million people. This growth has been accompanied by the rapid development of precarious, under-equipped settlements.
