[30 September 2013] -- The United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is gearing up for its 4th World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, which will be held in Rabat 1-4 October.

It is the first World Congress to be hosted in Africa, and marks the 100th anniversary of the municipal movement.

The theme for this year’s event is “Imagine Society, Build Democracy,” incorporating issues such as fostering wellbeing, managing diversity, new governance and dynamics of change and solidarity between territories.

Over 3,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to attend, including local and regional leaders, representatives from international organisations and financial institutions, along with partners from civil society and the public and private sector.

The Cities Alliance will have a strong presence at the World Summit, with a delegation that includes Director William Cobbett, Lead Urban Specialist Serge Allou, and Sr. Urban Specialist Rene Hohmann.

In addition to participating in the launch event, Cobbett will chair a plenary session on strengthening solidarity among territories scheduled for Thursday, 3 October. He will also serve as a panelist for two side events on 1 October:
  • The Challenges of Urban Growth: What Means for Local and Regional Authorities, organised by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 1 October; and
  • Strategic Urban Planning Workshop organised by Medcities and the cities of Rabat, Lyon and Barcelona.
