[15 June 2010] -- The World Bank Institute (WBI) has launched a new e-learning course on Sustainable Urban Land Use Planning for urban practitioners, policy makers, and city managers in developing countries.
 
A Functional Course for Urban Practitioners

    The new on-line course provides a functional and integrated overview of urban land dynamics, demonstrating how to effectively utilise policies and planning instruments to manage urban growth and achieve sustainable, equitable and efficient development outcomes.
  • Designed for urban practitioners, policy makers and city managers of various background disciplines involved in land use planning in developing countries who are confronted with the various challenges accompanying rapid urbanisation.
Six modules make up the course, with case studies of good practices from around the world. On-line tutors facilitate the week-long modules, designed to provide 8 hours of instruction per topic.
  1. Understanding How Land Use Planning Contributes to Sustainable Urban Development
  2. Institutions, Polices and Tools for Effective Land Use Planning
  3. How to Integrate Land Use Planning and Infrastructure
  4. How to Manage Growth in Peri-Urban Areas
  5. How to Promote Local Economic Development through Land Use Planning
  6. Social Equity and Land Use Planning

Piloting in June and Wider Availability Thereafter
 
A pilot course will be delivered by WBI this month with 42 participants from Canada, El Salvador, Ghana, Greece, Japan, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, the Netherlands, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom, and the United States.
