ACCRA, August 24, 2009 -- Theophilus Yartey, Deputy Editor of Ghana’s leading business newspaper, Business & Financial Times, has won the first Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu Finance & Economic Journalist of the Year Award.

The awards ceremony, which took place on August 15, is a prestigious annual event on the media calendar, organized by the Ghana Journalists Association, to honor best performing journalists in a wide range of categories.

The World Bank Group is sponsoring this as an annual award for Innovation and Excellence in Finance & Economic Journalism, in honor and memory of the late Finance Minister Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu.

“We are re-christening the Best Finance and Economic Journalist of the Year Award as the Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu Finance & Economic Journalist of the Year Award, in recognition of the great contribution the late Minister has made towards the development of the economy, and in particular, towards the advancement of finance and economic journalism in Ghana,” said Ishac Diwan, World Bank Country Director for Ghana.

The winner of the award receives a laptop computer and a two-week educational trip to the World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, D.C.

As part of this initiative, the Institute of Financial & Economic Journalists (IFEJ), an affiliate of the Ghana Journalists Association, has launched an annual Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu Finance and Economic Seminar Series, the first of which took place in November 2008.

In a related event, the Bank is collaborating with the Ghana Journalists Association to produce the first Ghana Media Directory. All journalists are, therefore, kindly requested to register at: Ghana Media Directory.
