On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, the Union for the Mediterranean has decided to focus on people-to-people cooperation by organizing a virtual civil society conference on the 24 and 25 of November 2020.

The Mediterranean region is renowned for the vibrant coexistence of culture and religions and for fostering the prosperous interchange of learning and trade. This shared history has created a strong regional networks, and our region has evolved with its characteristic diversity.

November 2020 will mark the 25th anniversary of one of the most important milestones in cooperation between the countries of the Mediterranean. The Barcelona Process launched in 1995 to strengthen such relations and this expression of good faith and the recognition that closer ties were in everyone’s interest, which would later lead to the creation of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).

Today, there are hundreds of positive initiatives that serve as examples of this commitment in action. From large-scale international projects to local collaborative initiatives, a consolidated network of cooperation has gradually developed and directly changed the lives of millions of citizens.

2020 must be a year of dialogue when we come together discussing our priorities and how we can build a better future for our region. With a determined vision guided by the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we need to exploit better the tools available to us and keep working collectively on the three pillars identified in the Barcelona Declaration: political and security; economic and financial; and cultural and human. The complementarity between these areas combined with sustainable development can give the answers to the unprecedented crisis we face.

On 24 November 2020, three working sessions will be organised to explore in-depth the role of civil society actors and its perspectives in addressing the major challenges faced by the Euro-Mediterranean region, namely environmental and climate change, gender equality and social inclusion. These sessions, animated by UfM partners will give space to the 25 selected projects to discuss actions on the ground and will draw operational conclusions to be discussed during the main event of 25 November.

On this day, Cities Alliance will be represented by Giulia Maci, Urban Specialist and Head of Cities for Women Programme - will participate during the working session about Civil Society & Gender Equality.
