The city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil will host the
event, Metropolis – Latin America & Caribbean from
December 3 to 5, 2007. Mayors and city
administrators from over 80 Latin American and
Caribbean cities with population of over one million
people are expected to meet to debate and share
successful experiences of public policies
implemented in Latin American and Caribbean
metropolis.
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
report State of the World's Population, in
2007 over 50 percent of the world population lives
in urban areas. In Latin America, this percentage is
even higher: out of 561.3 million inhabitants living
in the region, around 77 percent live in urban
areas. In spite of the peculiarities of each large
city, there is a noticeable convergence of their
main challenges. Urban, social and co-existential
issues demand permanent attention and search for
consensus-based solutions.
This is why the exchange of experiences is important
and contributes to the consolidation of cities that
are sustainable, safe, inclusive and liveable.
