Slum Dwellers International Joins the Cities Alliance

The Cities Alliance is delighted to welcome Slum Dwellers International (SDI), whose application to join the Cities Alliance was unanimously accepted by the Consultative Group at its meeting in Manila on the 8th and 9th November. SDI was represented by its President, Jockin Arputham, and SDI co-ordinator, Joel Bolnick.

The Cities Alliance and its members have been working with SDI and their affiliates for a number of years through activities such as Community-Led Infrastructure Financing Facility - CLIFF (in Mumbai, Kenya and, most recently, the Philippines), and SDI affiliates have also taken part in a number of Cities Alliance events, including the 2002 Public Policy Forum in Kolkata.

Cities Alliance Manager William Cobbett hailed the decision of SDI to join the organisation, noting that it was vital that perspectives of the urban poor be directly represented at the policy-making level of the organisation. He also said that it was a fitting complement to the new direction outlined in the Alliance's Medium Term Strategy, currently being finalised.
