How Can the Environment be Integrated into City Planning?

Send us your feedback

During the forthcoming Public Policy Forum to take place in Washington DC in conjunction with the Cities Alliance Annual Consultative Group meeting, the environmental aspects of city development will be thrust in focus. The Alliance hereby invites comments/feedback on two studies it financed as background for the discussion.

The first one is More Urban, Less Poor, More liveable, written by International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives - Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI).

How can a city provide sustainable public transport in times of tight municipal budgetary? How can a city build environmental friendly communities for the urban poor? How can a city produce energy through waste and reduce green house gas emissions? How can a city involve its citizens in a city visioning process?

Bayamo, Goiania, Hyderabad and Calgary are among the cities providing answers to these and other pressing questions in a new report entitled, "More Urban, Less Poor, More Liveable: How to Integrate Environment into City Planning" by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, UNEP and the Cities Alliance. It highlights how cities from all regions of the world improved the lives of city residents through participatory environmental planning and management.

The second is a discussion paper written by the former Mayor of Honolulu, Mr. Jeremy Harris, titled Toward a Sustainable Urban Paradigm; Cities – The Problem or The Solution?

The views from members, clients, academia, consultants and the public on these draft reports are highly appreciated. Please send us your feedback.
