What is the Cities Alliance?

The Cities
Alliance is a global coalition of cities and
their development partners committed to scaling
up successful approaches to poverty reduction;

The Alliance
brings cities together in a direct dialogue with
bilateral and multilateral agencies and
financial institutions;

Alliance members
promote the developmental role of local
governments and help cities of all sizes obtain
more coherent international support;

By promoting the
positive impacts of urbanisation, the Alliance
helps local authorities plan and prepare for
future growth;

The Alliance helps
cities develop sustainable financing strategies,
and attract long-term capital investments for
infrastructure and other services.

What does the Cities
Alliance do?
The Alliance provides
matching grants in support of:
-
City development
strategies (CDS) which link the process by which
local stakeholders define their vision for their
city and its economic growth, environmental and
poverty reduction objectives, with clear
priorities for actions and investments;

Citywide and
nationwide slum upgrading in accordance with the
Alliance’s
Cities Without
Slums action plan (MDG
Target 11), including promoting secure tenure,
access to shelter finance and policies to help
cities prevent the growth of new slums; and
-
Sustainable
financing strategies for cities to attract the
long-term capital investments needed for
infrastructure, including improving
accountability for service delivery and
demonstrating stable revenue streams to more
effectively leverage domestic capital.

How do I/does
my organization become a member?
The
Consultative Group (CG) is composed of financial
contributors to the Cities Alliance Trust and the
political heads of the international associations of
cities and local authorities which have pledged
their strong commitment to and engagement in
achieving the goals of the Cities Alliance. All
donors are required to make a minimum contribution
to the Alliance's Core Fund of US$250,000 per annum.
In the case of regional development banks, such core
contributions can be tied to their relevant
operational regions where required by their
statutes. Governments of developing and transition
countries and territories (as included in the
OECD's
Development Assistance Committee's List of Aid
Recipients)
are required to make a minimum contribution to the
Core Fund of US$50,000 (or local currency
equivalent) per annum. Prospective financial
partners may be invited to serve as “Associate
Members” of the Cities Alliance Consultative
Group for a maximum period of two years. The
associate membership is non-voting but shares
information and participates in key meetings.

What is the
Cities Alliance's policy on sharing information
with the public?
Access to information
stimulates public debate, broadens understanding of
development issues, and enhances transparency and
accountability in the development process. It also
strengthens public support for development efforts,
resulting in improvements in the quality of
assistance. Therefore, it is the Cities Alliance's
policy to be open about its activities. The Alliance
welcomes and seeks out opportunities to explain its
work to the widest possible audience.
