CDKN invites applicants to submit proposals which explore how the rapid growth of small and medium cities in Latin America can be harnessed to deliver climate-resilient, transformative urban development.

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), the International Development Research Centre of Canada (IDRC) and Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (FFLA) are pleased to launch the Climate Resilient Cities in Latin America research call.

With a total budget of US$1.5 million, this research call focuses on climate resilience in urban contexts, and specifically on small and medium cities in Latin America that are experiencing rapid growth. It is expected to fund around six projects of between 12 – 21 months duration. The final number and size of awards will depend, among other factors, on the quality of proposals and amount of funding requested by applicants.

What CDKN Is Looking For

Latin America’s population is already predominantly urban, and this trend is ongoing; in absolute terms the urban population will increase significantly over the coming decades. The bulk of urban growth in the region is taking place in small and medium cities. As these cities grow, they have an important opportunity to steer their development along a climate-resilient pathway. Thoughtful and innovative planning is critical in order to avoid challenges faced by larger cities such as poor air quality, access to water, sanitation and other services, and new risks created by settlement growth in hazard-prone areas and risk-blind decision making.

Under this research call, CDKN invites applicants to submit solution-orientated, thought-leading proposals which explore how the rapid growth of small and medium cities in Latin America can be harnessed to deliver climate-resilient, transformative urban development. It is seeking high quality applied research initiatives that sit across the boundary between research and advisory services. Multi and inter-disciplinary research is encouraged, where such collaborations have the potential to improve the quality of research, knowledge products and policy engagement processes.

All proposals must relate to one or more of the following countries: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, México, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Uruguay.

Applications must be submitted by Monday, 13 June.
