The European Union joined the Cities Alliance in 2008. The EU is represented at the Alliance by the following organisations:
The European Commission
The European Commission (EC) is the executive arm of the European Union. Independent of national governments, the EC drafts proposals for new European laws, which it then presents to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. The EC also represents and upholds the interests of the European Union as a whole.

The Directorate General for Development
The Directorate General for Development (DG DEV) formulates the European Union's development policy for all developing countries and coordinates the EU's relations with the Sub-Saharan African, Caribbean and Pacific countries and regions.
